JUDI CHICAGO: Judi Chicago X 1,000,000
Jun 26, 2008
By Lisa Hresko
Travis Thatcher and Ben Coleman wail away with such sentiments as, "Wave your stumps! Save your rumps!" on Judi Chicago's raucous rave-rally adventure. As if a million metronomes were beating your brain with a foot of raw salami, the duo twiddles mind-numbing electro thumps, pounding with drum and bass. But they aren't sample-truists. Instead, they employ modified electronic instruments to form each uniquely synth-influenced beat.
Not unlike Hello Nasty-era Beastie Boys, the faux-Chi town beatmasters (Thatcher is from Atlanta, Coleman hails from the UK) rhyme with exaggerated emphasis on the last beat in each meter, only their crass lyrics, at turns witty and crude, would warrant a nice little "Explict Content" sticker slapped across the front sleeve. But arent those the most fun records to get down to? The twosome makes dance friendly music (depending on your loose interpretation of "dance"), encouraging boogie fans to "Get ye to a disco!" then pepper each tune with titles and tongue-in-cheek lyrics better suited for a Gwar record. It's okay, you can laugh.
